BBC Expert Issues Warning Over Cash Payments for Home Services
BBC Morning Live presenter Holly Hamilton has issued a stark warning to consumers who pay in cash for home services, emphasising that obtaining refunds can become a major challenge if the work goes wrong. Hamilton highlighted that cash transactions often lack the legal safeguards available with digital payments, leaving homeowners vulnerable in disputes.
Red Flags and Consumer Risks
Hamilton pointed out that a service provider insisting on cash payment should raise concerns. "You do have to ask the question, if someone is coming into your home and insisting on you paying in cash, that to me is a little bit of a red flag," she stated. While acknowledging that not all cash payments are problematic, she suggested that some individuals might use cash to avoid tax obligations, though she clarified this is not the consumer's direct responsibility.
"It is not your responsibility if you are hiring someone that doesn't pay their taxes," Hamilton added. "Not essentially your problem. But when it comes to the aftermath, if you have a service, you know, somebody's doing something in your home and you're not happy with it and you would like to get your money back, it is very, very difficult to get that back if you have paid in cash."
Digital Payments Offer Legal Protection
Hamilton addressed common consumer preferences for cash, noting that many people feel more comfortable with physical money due to concerns about digital security or a lack of tech-savviness. However, she stressed that digital payments, such as bank transfers or card transactions, provide stronger legal protections under consumer law.
"You are protected by law for anything that you purchase that if anything goes wrong that you get that money back," she explained. "But the problem then is when you pay in cash. Those protections that exist for a very good reason are much harder to enforce."
This warning comes amid broader discussions on consumer rights and financial security, urging homeowners to consider payment methods that offer recourse in case of unsatisfactory services.
