Man Jailed for Brutal Attack on Partner That Required Facial Metal Plates

A man has been sentenced to prison for a vicious assault on his former partner that left her with such severe facial injuries she required metal plates to be surgically implanted. Jonathan Kingsbury, 41, carried out the attack in March 2023 after a night of drinking at a pub in Cork, Republic of Ireland.

Details of the Violent Incident

The court heard that Kingsbury and the victim had been out together before returning to a residence in Cork. Once inside, Kingsbury launched a brutal assault, hitting the woman's head against a counter top and a wall. He also broke her phone and struck her repeatedly in the face during the ordeal.

Prosecutor Aisling Brosnan described how Kingsbury "put his hands around her neck and threw heavy kitchen items at her." The victim managed to escape and sought help from neighbors, who contacted the Gardai.

Severe Injuries and Long-Term Impact

The attack resulted in devastating injuries for the victim. She suffered a fractured jaw that required metal plates to be inserted on both sides, a fractured eye socket, a broken nose, and lost two teeth. She spent three days in hospital undergoing surgery and faced months of recovery.

"For months after it, I was eating and drinking through straws," the victim said in her impact statement. "I lost two teeth as well because of the punches he gave me."

Beyond the physical trauma, the victim described profound psychological effects. She now suffers from anxiety attacks, sleep disturbances, and fear of encountering Kingsbury. "Before I go anywhere, I'll get an anxiety attack. It's horrible," she told the court. "I'm always afraid I'll bump into him."

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

Kingsbury, formerly of Connolly Road in Ballyphehane and more recently of Schull, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and criminal damage. Defence barrister Nikki O'Sullivan stated that her client was "disgusted at himself" and offered a repeated apology to the victim, assuring he would never approach her again.

Judge Helen Boyle emphasized the seriousness of the attack, noting it had "a very serious psychological and physical impact on the victim." She highlighted that the assault occurred in the victim's own home, an aggravating factor, and placed full blame on Kingsbury for the "vicious assault."

While acknowledging Kingsbury's remorse and his efforts to stay sober, Judge Boyle sentenced him to three years and nine months in prison, with the last nine months suspended for two years. A concurrent one-year sentence was given for criminal damage. Upon release, Kingsbury must maintain good behavior, engage with probation services, and keep the peace.

Ongoing Concerns and Victim's Courage

The judge warned that Kingsbury could pose a threat to future intimate partners if he relapses, despite assessments suggesting low risk to this specific victim. She commended the victim for attending court and delivering her impact statement, which detailed the lasting effects of the attack.

The victim also expressed ongoing concerns, including stiffness in her jaw and anxiety about airport security due to the metal plates. "I'm terrified about the machines and metal detectors in the airport, that my jaw will set them off," she said, describing her first trip abroad since the assault.

This case underscores the severe consequences of domestic violence and the long road to recovery for survivors, both physically and emotionally.
