Sandwell Mum-of-Two Voices Strong Support for Under-16s Social Media Ban
Sandwell Mum Supports Under-16s Social Media Ban

A West Midlands mother of two has expressed her unwavering support for the proposed ban on social media for individuals under the age of 16. Tejal Kaur, 31, a fraud and financial crime expert from Sandwell, is a vocal advocate for keeping young people in Birmingham and the Black Country away from platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X.

Government Announcement

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer unveiled plans on June 15 to permanently prohibit under-16s from accessing social media, with enforcement expected to begin in spring of the following year. The announcement has sparked widespread discussion among parents, including Tejal, who sees significant advantages in the measure.

Parental Perspective

Tejal told BirminghamLive she is fully behind the ban, stating, "I'm all for it. I think there are going to be so many benefits to it that aren't going to be realised for a really long time." She added, "There's no real reason that anyone under the age of 16 needs access to social media." Even if her children, aged three and four, were older, she would not grant them access, citing concerns about exposure to harmful content and algorithmic influence.

Tejal highlighted issues such as racist content and sensationalised media, which can easily become part of a child's daily experience through social media algorithms. While acknowledging the platform's potential for spreading genuine news, she noted such instances are rare.

Step in the Right Direction

Although the ban may not eliminate all challenges faced by the younger generation, Tejal views it as a positive step. "I think it's a step in the right direction to educate parents as to the government saying, this is not okay, like there needs to be a bit more enforcement and stricter. Once the regulation is in, it can only get tighter," she concluded.
