Thousands Face £206 Monthly Universal Credit Reduction in Labour Government Crackdown

Thousands of Universal Credit claimants are set to experience a significant reduction in their monthly Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) payments, with a cut of £206 per month, as part of a major crackdown by the Labour Party government. The changes specifically target the Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity (LCWRA) element of Universal Credit, which is being substantially reduced for new claims starting on April 6, 2026.

Details of the Payment Reduction

The sickness payment element of Universal Credit, known as the LCWRA element, is being slashed from £423.27 to £217.26 per month for new claims made on or after April 6, 2026. This represents a dramatic decrease of £206.01 monthly. Claimants who are already receiving the benefit or who submit a claim on or before April 5 will continue to receive the current rate of £105.82 per week, which translates to approximately £423.27 monthly.

However, individuals making a claim after this critical date will see their weekly payment drop to just £54.32, resulting in a monthly total of £217.26. Over the course of a year, this reduction leaves affected claimants £2,472 worse off, significantly impacting their financial stability and ability to cover essential living costs.

Understanding the LCWRA Element

The Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity is a key component of the Work Capability Assessment, which determines whether a claimant is placed in the 'Support Group' for New Style Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or classified as having LCWRA for Universal Credit purposes. The DWP utilizes a list of descriptors—examples of everyday activities and tasks—to assess eligibility.

If one or more of these descriptors apply to a claimant's situation, they may be categorized into the Support Group or deemed to have LCWRA. According to Citizens Advice, "If the DWP don’t think you can get ready for work, they’ll say you have 'limited capability for work-related activity' (LCWRA). You won’t have to work or do anything to get ready for work. You’ll get an additional payment in your Universal Credit called the ‘LCWRA element’."

Changes Effective from April 2026

Starting April 6, 2026, the LCWRA element will undergo a significant overhaul. The payment will be split into two tiers: a higher amount of £429.80 per month and a lower amount of £217.26 per month. The specific amount a claimant receives will depend on their individual circumstances, with existing recipients of the LCWRA element continuing to receive the higher rate from that date onward.

This policy shift marks a substantial adjustment to the welfare system under the Labour government, aimed at tightening eligibility and reducing payments for new claimants. The move is expected to affect thousands of individuals relying on Universal Credit for support due to health conditions or disabilities, sparking concerns about the financial impact on vulnerable populations.
