Wolverhampton Lawyer Died After Turkey Surgery, Inquest Hears of Workplace Teasing

A 28-year-old lawyer from Wolverhampton died from sepsis just days after undergoing cosmetic surgery in Turkey, an inquest has revealed. Diarra Brown passed away following a four-hour operation at the Private Memorial Hospital in Bahcelievler, Turkey, in October 2021.

Loan Taken for Surgery After Weight-Loss Journey

The Black Country Coroner's Court heard that Diarra Brown took out a £10,000 loan to pay for liposuction, a Brazilian butt lift (BBL), and an arm lift. This decision came after she experienced teasing at her workplace for being overweight, according to her mother, Daisy Brown.

Diarra had previously undergone weight loss operations that saw her drop from a size 18 to a size 10, losing eight dress sizes. The cosmetic procedures were intended to restore her confidence after this significant transformation.

Surgery and Rapid Deterioration

Diarra and her mother flew to Turkey on October 20, 2021, after being reassured by surgeon Dr. Sevket Gokhan Beyhan that the procedures were safe. The surgery took place on October 22, but Diarra soon began experiencing severe symptoms including coldness, soreness, bruising, and intense pain.

Despite multiple contacts with hospital staff, her family was told these symptoms were normal post-surgery effects. Her condition deteriorated rapidly over the weekend, with Diarra becoming unable to walk, suffering from swollen feet, and experiencing extreme discomfort.

Mother's Heartbreaking Account

In a statement read to the court, Daisy Brown described her daughter's suffering. "She could hardly put one foot in front of the other," Mrs. Brown said. "Her feet were swollen and she couldn't bend her toes on her left foot. It was hard for her to stand up."

Mrs. Brown detailed how she had to push her daughter around the room on a chair and help her onto the bed because Diarra couldn't move independently. By October 25, Diarra was sweating, had a high temperature, was breathless and lethargic, and was drifting in and out of consciousness.

Medical Evidence and Coroner's Findings

Dr. Vanya Gant, a consultant in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases at University College London Hospitals, examined Diarra's medical data and post-mortem results. Dr. Gant stated that Diarra suffered "a disastrous and very rapid and complete collapse" due to uncontrolled sepsis and septic shock.

Black Country Assistant Coroner Kelly Dixon concluded that Diarra died of sepsis and septic shock against the background of cosmetic surgery. The coroner noted that while the exact source of the sepsis couldn't be determined, the surgery materially contributed to the sequence of events leading to death.

Workplace Pressure and Final Journey

Mrs. Brown revealed that her daughter felt pressure to be slim in the legal profession. "During her training, she was still overweight and I think she got teased about it at her work," she told the court.

Diarra had communicated with the Turkish surgeon via WhatsApp before traveling, expressing that this would be the final step in her weight loss journey. The surgeon had reassured her that he had performed the procedure hundreds of times without any patient deaths.

Diarra Brown died on October 26, 2021, just three days after her surgery. Following the inquest, her mother said, "The hearing went the way I hoped it would," bringing some closure to the tragic case that highlights the risks of cosmetic surgery abroad and the impact of workplace bullying on personal decisions.
