Alison Hammond's Passionate Plea for Bridgerton Cameo Role
Birmingham-born television star Alison Hammond has openly expressed her desire to transition from daytime TV to a dramatic acting role, specifically targeting a cameo appearance in the hit Netflix series Bridgerton. During a recent interview on her This Morning co-host Dermot O'Leary's BBC Radio 2 show, Hammond revealed this career aspiration, highlighting her long-standing admiration for the period drama.
From Big Brother to Bridgerton: A Career Evolution
Alison Hammond first rose to fame in 2002 through the reality show Big Brother, subsequently building a successful presenting career on programmes like This Morning and The Great British Bake Off. Despite her established role in television, Hammond has previously explored acting with appearances on Doctors and The Dumping Ground, showcasing her versatility beyond the presenter's desk.
In her conversation with O'Leary, Hammond confessed, "I love Bridgerton. It's so diverse, you see black people in that time...I just love it." She elaborated on her efforts to secure a role, stating, "I want to be in it, so I have asked Jess [showrunner Jess Brownell] if I can be in the show, and I asked Shonda [executive producer Shonda Rhimes] but I don't think it's going to happen." This candid admission underscores her determination while acknowledging the potential challenges.
Early Acting Aspirations and Current Opportunities
Hammond's interest in acting dates back to her childhood, where she participated in drama workshops organised by Central Television from age 11. However, financial constraints prevented her from attending drama school, a setback she has overcome through her thriving television career. Her résumé now includes a diverse range of shows such as For the Love Of Dogs, Celebrity Coach Trip, MasterChef, The Masked Singer, and Celebs Go Dating.
Recently, Hammond's connection to Bridgerton deepened when Netflix approached her to host the Official Bridgerton Podcast, a role she eagerly accepted due to her status as a superfan. She explained, "They came to me, and it was literally a no-brainer. I'm a busy girl, I had no time, but I made the time. It had to be done. Because I love Bridgerton. I love escapism. I love the magic." This podcast involvement has given her behind-the-scenes insights, including trying on Queen Charlotte's wig.
Dream Character and Personal Reflections
If granted a role in Bridgerton, Hammond revealed her ideal character would be Lady Danbury, portrayed by Adjoa Andoh. She described her affinity for the role, saying, "I like to watch what's going on, observe, see what's happening. Maybe a little bit of a gossip here and there but nothing too extra." Hammond drew parallels between her own personality and Lady Danbury's traits, noting, "She knows what's going on. She has all the gossip. She's the one who delivers it. She gives people advice, and that is me."
Reflecting on her busy schedule, Hammond humorously added, "I'm the sort of person who probably stays in positions a bit too long and needs to spend a bit more time alone and have more holidays. And I feel like Lady Danbury needs a bit more time to herself." She dismissed the idea of playing Mrs. Whistledown, citing a lack of time for the writing involved, further emphasising her preference for an observational role.
This revelation highlights Alison Hammond's ongoing passion for acting and her desire to expand her career beyond presenting, while maintaining her signature charm and relatability that have endeared her to audiences nationwide.
