Candle Maker Snubbed by Influencers Lands Vogue Feature

A luxury candle maker from the West Midlands, initially overlooked by local influencers, has been featured in Vogue magazine and is now attracting interest from Vanity Fair and GQ.

Dark Foundry No.8, based in Willenhall, was founded by Paul Briggs and Viki Smith. Paul, a former crane operator, started the business in his kitchen after receiving a candle-making kit from Viki four years ago.

The couple craft scented candles inspired by local areas and football clubs. Their Bordesley candle, a nod to Birmingham City FC, blends rock salt and driftwood. The Garrison, subtly referencing Peaky Blinders, offers a whiskey and lemon scent. The Saddler, honoring Walsall's saddle-making heritage, features a rich smoky leather fragrance and is sold at Walsall FC's club shop.

After opening their factory and first shop in Willenhall last August, and a second in Burntwood last month, they were approached by British Vogue. Viki Smith said: "We spent so long trying to reach local influencers to help us. They kept ghosting us, we weren't big enough. Then one of the most iconic magazines said, 'We know you'."

A Stroke of Inspiration

The business was born from adversity. Viki suffered a stroke, leaving her unable to work. Paul explained: "That time off made us think, what are we waiting for?" They decided to pursue Dark Foundry full-time and haven't looked back.

The company name combines 'Dark' from their motto 'Where there's dark, we bring you light', 'Foundry' representing Black Country's industrial heritage, and '8' as their lucky number.

Challenges and Growth

Paul admits the intense scent-testing can lead to 'nose blindness', but they rely on staff to ensure quality. Another popular candle, Sister Dora, honors a Victorian nurse in Walsall, with profits supporting Well Wishes charity at Walsall Manor Hospital.

Dark Foundry No.8 is located at Unit 3 Russell Street, Willenhall, and Bradshaw’s Farm Shop, Ironstone Road, Burntwood.
