Peaky Blinders Creator Unveils Real-Life Inspirations for Tommy Shelby

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has opened up about the genuine inspirations behind the legendary character Tommy Shelby, portrayed by Oscar winner Cillian Murphy. This revelation comes as fans eagerly await the franchise's cinematic debut on Netflix with the film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.

The Personal Roots of a Birmingham Icon

During a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything session, Knight delved into the origins of Tommy Shelby, confessing that the character emerged almost mysteriously from his own family history. "I don't know where the characters I write actually come from," Knight admitted. "I used to pretend I had a plan, but I don't. I tend to just start writing."

He explained that Tommy Shelby is deeply rooted in the men of his father's generation, describing them as "locked boxes" who rarely showed emotion. "Men were different then. They wouldn't let any emotion show," Knight reflected. "I think of Tommy as being locked. If somebody comes across a box that's locked, you want to get in."

Knight emphasized that Tommy's occasional emotional openings are powerful moments, stating, "Tommy doesn't let you in—except sometimes he does. And when he does, it's like, wow. It's a celebration."

Birmingham: The Perfect Backdrop

When asked why Birmingham serves as the ideal setting for Peaky Blinders, Knight passionately defended his hometown. "For me, it's my hometown and I love it for all its glories and faults," he said. Knight highlighted Birmingham's industrial heritage, noting, "It's a place where people make things, they always have, it's where the industrial revolution began."

He described the city's unique character during the 1920s and 1930s, with factories creating a distinct rhythm. Knight also praised Birmingham's modest population, saying, "They don't want to overstate, they always understate, they never bang their drum. I just thought I would take on the role of the person who bangs the drum for Birmingham."

Historical Context and Global Impact

The Peaky Blinders were indeed a real violent street gang that operated primarily between the 1880s and 1920s, involved in organized crimes like illegal bookmaking. Known for their tailored suits and flat caps with hidden razor blades, they have become a global phenomenon through Knight's drama series.

Knight, who also created SAS Rogue Heroes and Taboo, previously mentioned that the concept for Peaky Blinders originated from family stories heard during his childhood. The new film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, introduces Barry Keoghan as Duke Shelby, presenting a new threat that lures Tommy Shelby out of retirement.

The AMA session featured not only Knight but also leading actor Cillian Murphy, co-star Tim Roth, and director Tom Harper, building excitement for the film's release. Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is currently screening in selected cinemas and will be available on Netflix starting March 20.
