Wonderful Women of Broxtowe Exhibition Celebrates Local Heroes
Wonderful Women of Broxtowe Photo Exhibition

A powerful new photographic exhibition celebrating the remarkable women of Broxtowe has opened at the D H Lawrence Birthplace Museum, shining a spotlight on the invaluable contributions women make across the Borough.

Portraits of Inspiration

The Wonderful Women of Broxtowe exhibition features portraits of women from diverse communities throughout the area. Each photograph is accompanied by three words the subject uses to describe herself, a short autobiography detailing her community role, and an inspirational statement to share with others.

Local photographers Lesley Grand-Scrutton and Anne Glew created this compelling project, which draws attention to the evolving roles of women in society and celebrates their success across various fields.

Behind the Lens

Lesley Grand-Scrutton explained the project's challenges and rewards. "Using my photography skills and powers of persuasion to tell a story is really important to me," she said. "This latest project gave me the opportunity to photograph inspirational women from the local community in their own environment, but the biggest challenge was getting them to summarise their life story in less than 200 words!"

Fellow photographer Anne Glew added: "Working on this project gave me the opportunity to meet and talk with women from various backgrounds, all of whom were modest about their achievements and positive contributions to society."

Exhibition Details and Impact

The exhibition was partly funded with £300 from the Council's C-City partnership, demonstrating local government support for community arts initiatives.

Beyond celebrating individual achievements, the exhibition highlights both the progress women have made and the ongoing work needed to address gender inequalities and systemic bias.

The Wonderful Women of Broxtowe is available to view now until Saturday, December 20 during museum opening hours of 10am-4pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The exhibition showcases women from Beeston, Eastwood, Kimberley and Stapleford.
