Holmfirth Arts Festival Returns for 2026 with Free and Pay As You Decide Events

The Holmfirth Arts Festival is set to make a vibrant comeback in 2026, offering all events free of charge or on a Pay As You Decide (PAYD) basis, thanks to generous funding from various supporters. This annual celebration, renowned for its high-quality street theatre, spectacular parade, and community co-created activities, will transform the streets of Holmfirth during the main weekend from June 12 to 14.

Inspired by the River Holme and Local Creativity

Now in its 19th year, the festival has become a highlight on the Holmfirth calendar, inspired by the River Holme through the theme of 'Flow'. This theme celebrates the picturesque Holme Valley landscape and the artistic spirit of its residents. The event will kick off and conclude with lively parties featuring live music, setting the tone for a weekend full of entertainment and engagement.

Key Festival Highlights and Activities

Among the standout features is the return of the River of Art, a community co-created art trail along the banks of the River Holme. Additionally, the Townships in Flow Parade will cascade through the town at 4:30 PM on Saturday, June 13, featuring hundreds of local participants in hand-made costumes, giant woodland creatures, a group of Nora Battys, and a 'mass brass' ensemble.

Attendees can look forward to a diverse array of performances, including traditional British and contemporary Brazilian music, Bhangra, French Breton dancing, choirs, and singers. Local schools will join in with giant puppets, while craft workshops, VR experiences, and an aerial circus spectacle add to the immersive experience. For those feeling adventurous, the Roaming Noras offer a chance to embody a favorite character from Last of the Summer Wine.

Funding and Community Support

Festival director Bev Adams expressed gratitude to funders such as Arts Council England, The Graveship of Holme, Kirklees Council, One Community Foundation, and Holme Valley Parish Council. "Thanks to our funders, we are able to produce an action-packed festival full of top quality arts and culture for all ages," she said. "There will be something for everyone, with opportunities to get involved in activities like the Mass Brass, River of Art, and Townships in Flow Parade."

Adams emphasized that while most costs are covered, allowing for world-class performers from the local area and across the UK, attendees are encouraged to make donations or use the PAYD system for opening and closing parties and showcase events. This support helps sustain local talent and bring inspiring performances to the Holme Valley.

Volunteer Efforts and Leadership Transition

The festival's success is also attributed to a voluntary Board of Trustees and a dedicated team of reliable and enthusiastic volunteers. Jan Ansell, chair of the festival board, highlighted this year's focus on emerging local talent, with a showcase scheduled for June 28 at the Picturedrome. "We are showcasing some of the creativity of our younger people," she noted.

This year marks the final festival under director Bev Adams, who has led the event for eight years. Ansell praised her contributions, calling her the 'Queen of the Parade' for revitalizing the historic parade and bringing memorable moments to Holmfirth.

Event Locations and Additional Details

Activities will be centered around Holmfirth, with key locations including Holmside Gardens and the Methodist Church. The festival launches on Friday, June 12, at The Box Office with Dr Pete's Salsa Band and dancing tips from the Holmfirth Salsa Group.
