Council Election Candidate Reports 'Ambush' Attack in Small Heath
Police have launched an investigation after a Birmingham council election candidate reported being ambushed and attacked, stating he feared for his life during the incident. Julian Nistor, who is running for the Workers Party of Britain in the Ward End ward for the May 7 election, claimed the attack occurred on Tuesday, April 14, in the Small Heath area.
Candidate Details Alleged Assault and Escape
Mr. Nistor described the event as an ambush by a group of men who blocked his vehicle on Coventry Road. He asserted that the attackers appeared intent on causing him serious harm, with their actions suggesting they "wanted to kill" him. Despite the assault on his car and attempts to remove him from it, he managed to escape unharmed.
In a statement, Nistor expressed his belief that the attack was politically motivated, aimed at intimidating him into withdrawing from the council elections. He emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that he "feared for his life" during the encounter.
Workers Party Responds to Incident
The Birmingham Branch of the Workers Party issued a response, highlighting that this is not the first time their candidates have faced violence. They referenced previous incidents during the General Election, including attacks on canvassers in Birmingham, a hit-and-run, and an assault outside a polling station.
The party stated their commitment to continuing their campaign despite such intimidation, urging West Midlands Police to take the matter seriously. They also announced plans to advise campaigners to take extra precautions due to past assaults that went unpunished.
Police Investigation and Public Appeal
West Midlands Police confirmed they are investigating a report of a car being damaged and threats made on Coventry Road in Small Heath at around 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Officers are conducting several enquiries, including a review of CCTV footage, and remain in contact with the complainant.
