The Leicester Caribbean Carnival will return on Saturday, August 1, 2026, marking the start of a new chapter under a new legal entity and leadership team. This year’s theme, Crowned by Culture – Caribbean Queens and Kings, celebrates the creativity, resilience, heritage and global influence of Caribbean culture.
New Leadership and Collaborative Model
Following challenging years, the new team is focused on rebuilding and strengthening the carnival with support from local troupes, partners, volunteers, sponsors and the wider community. The organisation extends sincere thanks to Dennis 'Sugar' Christopher for his 15 years of dedication; he continues in an advisory capacity. The team is also delighted to continue working with Zander Events after a successful partnership in 2025.
Highcross Programme Builds Momentum
In partnership with Highcross Leicester, a vibrant programme of activities will take over the city centre throughout July, showcasing how the new team intends to work in the future – bringing together organisations such as African Heritage Alliance, Opal22 and Highcross Leicester to create fresh opportunities for participation, visibility and growth.
Highlights Include:
- Carnival Heritage Exhibition (July 13-August 1): A celebration of Leicester Carnival’s history through photographs, costumes and memorabilia, including a VIP launch event and immersive experiences.
- Costume Workshops (July 18, 21, 23 and 25): Delivered by local troupes and supported by the National Education Union Leicester and Leicestershire District, open to all ages at Highcross and the African Caribbean Centre.
- Sound System Experience (July 18 and 25, 6pm-10pm): Bringing authentic Caribbean sound system culture to Highcross Grammar School Court with Passion and Viking Sound.
- Soca Dance Sessions: Free community sessions throughout July.
- Highcross Carnival Troupe Sponsorship: Sponsorship of Leicester-based troupes to ensure participation despite challenging funding.
Building a Sustainable Future
Leicester Caribbean Carnival 2026 is about more than one day. It is about creating a stronger, more sustainable carnival for future generations while celebrating culture, creativity and heritage. The organisation invites performers, artists, volunteers, sponsors, businesses, schools and community groups to be part of the next chapter.
