Leicester families can step back in time this month as the popular free creative festival Cultural Quarter Earlies returns with an ancient Roman theme. The event takes place on Saturday, July 11, from noon to 4pm, as part of this year's Festival of Archaeology.
Roman Activities Across the City
Roman-themed activities will be hosted at venues including Curve, Phoenix, Two Queens, Leicester Print Workshop, Central Library, and LCB Depot. Free Roman chariot rides will run between all venues from noon to 4pm, taking attendees to the Jewry Wall Museum, which offers exclusive discounted entry: adult tickets at £5 and child tickets at £3, available at reception.
The festival, aimed at toddlers to 10-year-olds and their grown-ups, offers free drop-in activities on the second Saturday of every month.
Venue-Specific Highlights
LCB Depot: Children can build and destroy a city, construct an aqueduct, and uncover real Roman remains alongside a real archaeologist.
Curve: The Mixit! Arts Academy hosts 'Remember the Romans', where families can decorate a mosaic, create a sundial or Roman mask, and play educational puzzles and games.
Leicester Print Workshop: A drop-in session inspired by Roman pottery allows participants to create drypoint prints, suitable for ages four and above.
Phoenix: Budding gladiators can design their own swords and shields in an adventure-themed workshop run by Kala Arts.
Two Queens: A miniature Roman bust-making workshop is open for youngsters, most suitable for ages three and above.
Central Library: Children can discover Roman books for the Summer Reading Challenge, alongside a 'Read to the beat!' session featuring Roman drums and cymbals.
Jewry Wall Museum: Visitors can work with exhibition designers from Haley Sharpe Design to create their own museum or film storyboard based on real artefacts.
