South Asian Heritage Month: A Celebration of Culture and Identity
South Asian Heritage Month, running from July 1 to July 31, is a time for Britons to commemorate, educate, and celebrate South Asian heritage in the UK. For Hannah Ahmed, a community reporter, this month holds deep personal significance as a mixed race woman with Pakistani and English roots.
Birmingham's Rich South Asian Heritage
Birmingham stands as one of the greatest examples of diversity in Britain, with 31 per cent of its residents identifying as Asian, Asian British, or Asian Welsh in the 2021 census. The city's South Asian communities have contributed immensely to its cultural fabric, from cooking and clothing to dance and language.
Unity in Diversity: This Year's Theme
The 2024 theme for South Asian Heritage Month is Unity in Diversity, highlighting the extraordinary breadth and richness of South Asian communities in the UK and worldwide. This theme resonates deeply with Ahmed, who sees the month as an opportunity to honour the contributions of migrants from South Asia who arrived decades ago.
A Personal Journey of Heritage
Ahmed's father immigrated from Pakistan at age five, unable to speak English, yet went on to earn a PhD, work for the Ministry of Defence, run a family business, and lecture at Birmingham University. Her mother was born and raised in the Black Country, giving Ahmed a deep English heritage rooted in Staffordshire, Worcester, and the Black Country.
Discovering Ancestral Roots
Delving into her South Asian history, Ahmed learned about her great-grandfather, Hamid Khan Bhatti, one of the first South Asians to attend Cambridge University, completing his PhD in the 1920s. His zoology textbooks are still used in Pakistan today. This legacy fuels Ahmed's pride in her culture.
Beyond Ethnicity: A Message of Respect
Ahmed emphasises that South Asian Heritage Month transcends race or culture. It is about respecting each other, learning from diverse backgrounds, and celebrating the individuals who make Birmingham and the UK beautiful. The month serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and understanding in a multicultural society.
