Mulberry Appoints Christopher Kane as Creative Director for Fashion Revival

Somerset-based luxury handbag maker Mulberry has announced the appointment of Scottish fashion designer Christopher Kane as its new creative director. The 43-year-old Glaswegian will spearhead the relaunch of the Chilcompton-headquartered brand's women's ready-to-wear collection, with his debut collection set to be unveiled at London Fashion Week in September.

Industry Acclaim and Strategic Move

The fashion industry has warmly welcomed Kane's appointment, with Vogue highlighting that his absence since closing his business in 2023 was "almost criminal oversight of a major talent of his generation." Mulberry stated that this partnership represents "the next step" in its recovery strategy, initiated last year to combat declining sales.

Kane, a graduate of Central Saint Martins, is highly respected in fashion circles, having worked for Donatella Versace and garnered fans like Rihanna and Michelle Obama. He is the recipient of the Vogue Fashion Fund and four British Fashion Awards, including Womenswear Designer of the Year.

Kane's Career and Mulberry's Comeback

In 2006, Kane founded his eponymous label with his sister Tammy. French multinational Kering acquired a 51% stake in 2013, but Kane repurchased the business five years later, only to shut it down during the pandemic as the fashion sector faced immense pressure.

Mulberry's return to London Fashion Week this year marks its first catwalk show in nearly a decade. Kane's collection will be available in stores and online from January 2027, according to the heritage brand.

Leadership and Vision

Andrea Baldo, chief executive of Mulberry, said, "Welcoming Christopher marks an important moment for Mulberry as we open a new chapter for ready-to-wear. Christopher brings a rare combination of creativity, intellectual rigour and instinctive playfulness, alongside a deep respect for craft and materials. His vision resonates strongly with Mulberry’s heritage and the spirit of British creativity that defines the house. Together we look forward to evolving Mulberry’s creative language beyond accessories and shaping a compelling future for ready-to-wear on a global stage."

Kane added, "It is an honour to join Mulberry, a brand with such a rich British heritage and a deep commitment to craft. I look forward to working closely with Andrea and the team to create a new chapter of ready-to-wear that celebrates the spirit of Mulberry."

Financial Context

In January, Mulberry reported robust sales figures for the Christmas trading period, indicating that its transformation plan is beginning to yield positive results, setting a promising backdrop for Kane's new role.
