A Day in the Life of a BirminghamLive Photographer Revealed
Nick Wilkinson, a dedicated photographer for BirminghamLive, has embarked on a new venture to showcase his daily work through engaging TikTok videos. Traveling extensively across the West Midlands, Nick captures a wide array of scenes, ranging from vibrant restaurants to intense murder investigations.
Sharing the Photographer's Journey
At 50 years old, Nick decided to join the growing trend of BirminghamLive staff creating TikTok accounts. His motivation stems from a desire to share the unique aspects of his profession with a broader audience. "It is something I had thought about doing for a little while," Nick explained. "With TikTok becoming more important to BirminghamLive, it seemed like the right moment."
He emphasizes the diversity of his job, noting, "I think it is an interesting job and I just want to share it with other people." Nick aims to present an authentic view, stating, "Some of it came out of interactions I have had - negative and positive - and with that in mind I want to make sure the videos are warts-and-all."
The Daily Grind of a Photographer
Nick's role involves supporting journalists by being on the road, taking pictures and video footage. His contributions are crucial for expanding BirminghamLive's audiences on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. However, describing an average day proves challenging for him.
"It is difficult to say," Nick admitted. "There are a lot of days where you are just sat there waiting to happen then all of a sudden it can just become relentless. You might be sat outside court then something happens that changes everything."
To capture this unpredictability, Nick uses a body cam that he wears consistently, producing short films with sped-up versions of his daily activities. These videos offer a glimpse into the fast-paced and varied nature of photojournalism in the region.
Embracing Digital Platforms
By sharing his experiences on TikTok, Nick joins a digital movement within BirminghamLive to connect with viewers in innovative ways. His videos not only highlight the technical aspects of photography but also the human stories behind the lens.
This initiative reflects a broader shift in media, where behind-the-scenes content helps build engagement and transparency. Nick's efforts underscore the importance of visual storytelling in today's news landscape, providing an insider's perspective on the life of a photographer in the West Midlands.
