A Historic Heirloom Makes a Grand Return
For the prestigious German State Banquet, held on 4 December 2025, the Princess stepped out alongside her husband, Prince William, in a sparkling blue Jenny Packham gown. However, all eyes were drawn upwards to the magnificent Oriental Circlet Tiara, a piece last seen in public nearly two decades ago.
This marked the first time Kate has ever worn this particular crown. Following the death of the Queen Mother in 2002, the late Queen Elizabeth II wore the tiara only once, in 2006, making its reappearance a significant moment in modern royal history.
The Rich History of the Oriental Circlet
This tiara is one of the oldest and most important pieces in the Royal Collection. It was first crafted in 1853 for Queen Victoria, under the direction of her husband, Prince Albert.
Originally, the design featured opals, a favourite gemstone of Prince Albert, alongside 2,600 diamonds. Its intricate, Indian-inspired design of lotus flowers and Mughal arches remains. Later, Queen Alexandra, believing opals to be unlucky, had them replaced with the striking rubies seen today.
As noted by crown jewellers Garrard, the Oriental Circlet is considered one of the "most important" tiaras in the collection.
