Mecca Bingo in Kingstanding, Birmingham, is set to close permanently in June, marking the end of an era for a venue that has been a local landmark for decades. The bingo hall, located in the Art Deco former Odeon cinema building on Kettlehouse Road at Kingstanding Circle, is expected to shut its doors for the final time on Sunday, June 7, pending final confirmation.
Historic Venue to Close
The venue originally opened as an Odeon cinema in July 1935, designed by architects Harry Weedon and Cecil Clavering as part of Oscar Deutsch’s cinema chain. It ceased operating as a cinema in 1962 and was converted into a Top Rank Bingo Club before becoming a Mecca Bingo hall. Over the years, it has served as a popular leisure spot for the local community.
Financial Challenges and Repairs
Rank Group, the parent company of Mecca Bingo, cited the club’s lack of profitability over an extended period as the primary reason for the closure. The company also noted that the building requires significant repairs and maintenance, making it economically unviable to keep operating. A spokesperson for Rank Group stated: “It is with a heavy heart that we are proposing the closure of our Kingstanding club. The club has not been profitable for some time and requires considerable repairs and maintenance, which make it challenging for the venue to remain in operation.”
Impact on Staff and Customers
Staff members are currently being consulted about their future, and a final decision is expected early next month. Customers have been informed of the proposed closure date. The venue is one of only two Mecca Bingo locations remaining in Birmingham, the other being in Acocks Green. Its closure will leave a gap in the local entertainment landscape.
Community Reactions
The closure has sparked sadness among regular patrons, who recall the venue’s vibrant atmosphere and its role as a social hub. Local residents have expressed disappointment, noting the building’s historical significance as a former cinema and its contribution to the area’s character. Some have called for the building to be repurposed, similar to the revival of Sutton Coldfield’s Odeon as the Royal Cinema under independent group PDJ Cinemas.
Rank Group emphasized that they are committed to supporting affected staff during the consultation process. The company added that they will advise the team and customers once a final decision is reached.
