MAFS Australia's Mel Issues Public Apology for 'Insensitive' Behavior

Married at First Sight Australia contestant Mel Akay has publicly apologized for her treatment of co-star Luke Fourniotis, following backlash from viewers and Luke's own revelations about experiencing "PTSD" from the show. The apology, shared via social media, addresses several contentious moments aired during the experiment.

Addressing Viewer Backlash and Edited Scenes

In a detailed Instagram post consisting of eight slides, Mel expressed regret for her actions and attempted to clarify incidents she felt were misrepresented in the edit. She acknowledged that watching herself on television had been challenging, stating, "Over the past few weeks I've watched parts of myself on TV that have been difficult to see. There were moments where I didn't communicate well and came across insensitive."

She added, "For that, I'm truly sorry to anyone who felt hurt or offended. This experience has been a huge learning curve for me. I'm not perfect, and seeing things play back has made me reflect on how I handle certain moments. All I can do is acknowledge it and keep growing."

Specific Apologies and Clarifications

Mel specifically apologized for a comment she made about "stalking" during Revelations Week, emphasizing that she does not condone such behavior. She explained, "I was referring to something from when I was 17 and joking with friends, and it was careless of me to say it the way I did. I regret it."

She also sought to correct perceived inaccuracies from the show's edit. Regarding her wedding episode, Mel claimed, "I did not ignore Luke's sisters. I went over, hugged them and spoke with them, as well as his mum, who were all lovely to me. I genuinely wish them all the best." This contrasts with footage showing her shaking her head when Luke asked if she wanted to meet his sisters.

Additionally, Mel addressed a scene about Luke sleeping on the floor with a towel, stating it was a joke between them and that he slept in the bed the entire time. She concluded her apology by expressing sorrow for not developing romantic feelings for Luke, saying, "Luke is a good person and I genuinely wish him the best. At the end of the day, I'm still learning like everyone else."

Impact on Participants

This apology comes amid reports of significant emotional toll on both participants. Mel previously told Daily Mail Australia that she had been "too scared to go outside" for three weeks due to viewer hate, asserting, "People think they know Mel from MAFS. Mel from MAFS isn't a real person. I am a real person."

Meanwhile, Luke revealed to the same publication that he feels he has "PTSD" from the experience, stating, "I feel like I actually had like a bit of PTSD… I'd been in this experiment with Mel and just wasn't really treated nicely kind of thing." He added that he hasn't been able to enjoy fan support as a result.

The situation highlights the intense scrutiny and psychological effects reality TV can have on its participants, with both Mel and Luke navigating public perception and personal recovery post-show.
