Birmingham Micro-Artist Creates Incredible Peaky Blinders Sculpture in Needle's Eye
A world-renowned micro-artist from Birmingham has achieved an astonishing feat by crafting a minuscule sculpture of Peaky Blinders character Tommy Shelby inside the eye of a needle. Dr Willard Wigan MBE, aged 68, used his own eyelash as a paintbrush to bring this microscopic masterpiece to life.
Meticulous Craftsmanship Between Heartbeats
Dr Wigan labored with incredible precision, working between his heartbeats to carve the figure of Tommy Shelby atop a black horse. The sculpture measures a mere 0.5 millimeters, making it barely larger than a standard full stop in printed text. This remarkable attention to detail required immense patience and specialized techniques.
The artist dedicated sixteen hours each day over a five-week period to complete the micro-sculpture at his Birmingham workshop. He constructed the piece from lightweight Kevlar fiber, demonstrating both artistic vision and technical expertise in handling such delicate materials.
Inspired by Birmingham's Cultural Impact
Willard explained his motivation for creating this particular piece, stating he wanted to honor the celebrated Brummie gang following the premiere of the Peaky Blinders film. He noted how the series has significantly contributed to putting Birmingham on the global cultural map.
"I have loved watching the series and seeing the story evolve," said Willard from his Edgbaston home. "How it has helped put Birmingham on the map for a worldwide audience is remarkable. I like the way the Peaky Blinders dress and the mystery of it all. That image of Tommy on the horse felt particularly iconic and mystical."
Extraordinary Technical Challenges
The artist revealed the considerable difficulties involved in creating such a microscopic sculpture, especially one featuring a horse. "They say horses are the hardest things to draw, let alone to craft a microscopic version," he explained. "I didn't fully appreciate how tricky it would be."
Willard utilized his photographic memory to visualize the image before employing specialized microscopic tools for the actual construction. "One tool is so sharp you can't even see the blade," he described. "I also used an acupuncture needle with a toothpick acting as a handle."
For painting details, he found an eyelash on his pillow that served as his microscopic paintbrush. "At that minuscule level, you have to manipulate the paint very quickly because it dries so fast," he noted about the challenging process.
Exhibition for Animal Charity
The miniature Peaky Blinders creation is currently displayed alongside nineteen other pieces at the Cornbow Shopping Centre in Halesowen, West Midlands. All funds raised from the exhibition will benefit Mutts Dog Rescue, an animal rescue charity close to the artist's heart.
Willard, who previously held the world record for crafting the smallest handmade sculpture and received an MBE for services to art in 2007, expressed his passion for animal welfare. "Ever since I was a kid, I've always been fond of animals, especially dogs," he said. "Unfortunately, some animals are treated badly, so I wanted to support this amazing charity."
Community Support for Rescue Efforts
Lucy Antill from Mutts Dog Rescue welcomed the exhibition's support, stating: "We are all volunteers here, and anything we can do to raise the profile of the work we do or get the community involved is welcome. We are not a big organization, but we are all dedicated to getting forever homes for dogs that may have been mistreated or abandoned."
Antill added praise for the artist: "Willard is a dog lover who I have known for a number of years, and his range of work is incredible."
Exhibition Details and Cultural Context
The exhibition, titled Through the Microscope and In the Eye of a Needle, will continue for the next four weeks, offering visitors a chance to witness these extraordinary microscopic creations. This artistic achievement coincides with the recent launch of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which premiered in select UK cinemas on March 6th and is scheduled to arrive on Netflix worldwide.
