Toby Carvery employees have shared the perks and drawbacks of working at the popular roast dinner chain, and there are nine issues in particular they wish all customers knew.
1. Yes, We Do Get Free Food
This is arguably the greatest perk of the job - after all, who wouldn't love heaping piles of roast potatoes on their plate, especially when it doesn't cost a penny? Many Toby Carvery outlets provide staff with a 33% discount across all locations, but the employees we spoke to were getting plenty of grub without spending a thing. It comes in extra handy for those on shift while nursing a hangover, as the food helps set them straight in no time.
2. We Say Sorry Hundreds of Times Per Shift
Customers are everywhere – even more so on a Sunday. So navigating through them – while smiling and offering apologies – has become quite the skill. Staff told us they understand it's hectic, but they would really appreciate it if you could make way for them while they are collecting plates.
3. Refill Your Own Drinks
Staff said: "If you've got a bottomless drink and you're able to top it up yourself, please do. And don't even get us started on customers who want a refill every five minutes."
4. It's All Gravy
They say you should not bring work home with you, but there is one reminder that many Toby Carvery workers simply cannot shake. There have been many occasions where they have arrived home smelling like gravy - which may sound fun on paper but is significantly less so in reality.
5. Our Feet Are Gross
Anyone working in hospitality will tell you about the damage the job does to your feet – and working at Toby Carvery is no different. Dashing about all day in smart shoes leaves staff with hardened soles and painful blisters that make them reluctant to wear sandals on holiday. Staff said: "And don't get us started on the bruises from lugging heavy plates around!"
6. It's Hard to Stay Slim
You would think being on your feet all day would keep you in shape. However, being surrounded by wonderfully fragrant food throughout an entire shift can prove rather damaging to the waistline. Even if staff manage to resist the temptation during their shift, it is incredibly hard not to start indulging once they are back home.
7. Running Out of Meat Can Be a Good Thing
Okay, running out of meat might seem like a Carvery nightmare to most people - but not to staff. In fact, they love to see customers piling their plates high - but why? Well, when food stocks run low, staff can sometimes clock off early – jackpot!
8. Staff Discount Makes Us VERY Popular
Who does not want to get money off their Sunday roasts? The staff perks go down a treat with friends and family, who can get a third off when they are with a staff member, too.
9. Don't Forget to Tip
While the Carvery is self-service, there is still a team working hard to clear up after you. Staff appreciate customers who spare a thought for those rushed off their feet on busy Sunday afternoons.
