Annie at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre: A Masterclass in Talent
Annie at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre: A Masterclass

I saw Annie at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre and I've never felt so untalented. You'd be having a hard knock life not to enjoy Annie!

An Unforgettable Experience

This is the first show I have ever seen with children in the cast. My only expectations were memories of my own school play days, with kids singing off key, not smiling and picking their noses. So this cast were not only a step above them, they were out of this world talented!

From the word go, this incredible team of youngsters were commanding your attention with their strong and synced-up vocals and powerful stage presence. Annie (Sophie Saravanan) sparkled and led with strength and confidence. The energy was bubbling out of her and her voice was definitely applause worthy.

Nothing like a group of insanely talented kids to make you feel you have underachieved in life. I have seen grown adults struggle to pick up a basic two-step dance but these kids were jumping off beds and running circles around anything I'd seen before. I was awe struck, all within the first 10 minutes.

La Voix Shines as Miss Hannigan

Then La Voix graced the stage with that iconic red hair as Miss Hannigan. I had only previously seen La Voix as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing so I knew her stage persona was next to none, but that voice! I now see where the name comes from!

The unintentional comedy star was Sandy the dog played by the lovely Cockerpoo Dizzy, from the minute they entered the stage the audience was besotted. If those eyes could talk, they would talk of nothing but treats and fuss. They were the talk of the interval and had the entire audience in stitches.

A Masterclass in Storytelling

This whole show was a masterclass in bringing a vibrant story to life, every moment from the dancing to the pet-ography was smooth. The moments when all cast were on stage dancing together, kids and adults, nearly brought me to tears! I left with a lighter heart and a strong desire to go to N-Y-C!

Annie the Musical is at the Alexandra Theatre until Saturday, June 6.
