On a Viking Longship Atla river cruise along the Danube, the warmth of genuine human connection rivals the stunning scenery. From the moment an elderly gentleman from Alabama stepped aside with a courteous 'After you, sir,' the voyage felt less like a cruise and more like a family reunion.
A Boutique Hotel on Water
The Atla, named after the Norse Goddess of Water, combines sleek Scandinavian design with high-quality dining. It appeals to well-educated, culturally curious adults seeking immersive experiences. This vision, pioneered by Norwegian billionaire Torstein Hagen, focuses on the 'thinking person' rather than the drinking person, setting it apart from massive floating resorts.
Onboard Camaraderie
Among the 190 passengers, mostly from the USA, a Sister Sledge 'We are Family' spirit prevailed. Conversations flowed as freely as cocktails, with couples and solo travelers from New York, Georgia, and Canada sharing life stories and laughter. The UK-USA special relationship thrived both on deck and during shore excursions.
Shore Excursions and Guides
Daily included and optional tours featured exceptional guides. Quirky Sandra in Linz charmed with tales of her boyfriend's Christmas gift—a shower head. At Gottweig Abbey, guide Klaudia amused us with the story of an 86-year-old monk who passed his driving test despite the other monks' prayers. Even the river itself wasn't spared: operations manager Niki joked about the 'Blue Danube' looking decidedly grey.
Highlights Along the River
In Vienna, we enjoyed hot chocolate and cake after a cathedral tour, followed by a Mozart and Strauss concert. Back on board, bowls of goulash and schnapps awaited. Next, Bratislava offered an intimate walking tour and a visit to 100 piv microbar, where friendly pub dogs Dusty and Max provided entertainment. Finally, Budapest dazzled with its restored beauty. We explored Europe's oldest underground railway (M1), the Underground Museum, the Opera House, and the Museum of Fine Arts, ending with snacks and pilsner in a City Park café.
Family Feel
The genuine care extended to the crew. Waiter Malin from Bosnia shared memories of his hometown during the 1990s war. Captain Stefan honks the horn as he passes his home near the river in Slovakia, delighted when his wife and daughters wave. That feeling of family persisted through to the final evening, with farewell toasts and a concert by Hungarian Opera stars.
