Dudley's Iconic Rock Pub Ye Olde Foundry Forced to Close Amid Cost Dispute
Dudley Rock Pub Closes as Petition Gains 1,500 Signatures

The sudden closure of a cherished rock music pub in the West Midlands has left the local community reeling, with hundreds of residents rallying to save the venue through a rapidly growing petition.

A Sudden Shutdown in Dudley

Ye Olde Foundry, located on King Street in Dudley, unexpectedly shut its doors last week, marking the end of an era for one of the Black Country's most popular live music destinations. The closure has sparked widespread dismay among locals, many of whom have fond memories of the venue's vibrant rock nights.

Financial Pressures and a Hefty Fine

According to reports, the pub was forced to close after being ordered to do so by the Stonegate Pub Company. The licensee, Mr Hall, who took over the establishment in September 2023, revealed that the pub was fined a staggering £40,000 for purchasing drinks from an independent wholesaler instead of through Stonegate's direct supply chain.

Mr Hall expressed his frustration with the terms imposed by the pub company, stating they made the business unsustainable. He highlighted extreme price disparities, noting that a bottle of Jack Daniel's whisky costs £19 in supermarkets but is charged at £64 when sourced directly from Stonegate. "As soon as I signed the five-year lease, the rent skyrocketed and the purchase prices went through the roof," he explained.

Community Backlash and Petition Drive

In response to the closure, a petition has been launched calling for Ye Olde Foundry to be reopened. So far, nearly 1,500 people have signed the appeal, demonstrating strong local support for the venue. The pub's reputation for hosting lively rock music nights has made it a cultural hub, and its loss is felt deeply by music enthusiasts across the region.

Mr Hall detailed the financial struggles that led to the decision to buy stock from wholesalers, saying, "In our third year, we had to start buying stock from wholesalers just to keep costs down and keep trading, solely due to the rising cost of bills." Despite legal efforts to address issues of price fixing, he lamented that time had run out, with solicitors unable to resolve the dispute.

Stonegate's Response and Ongoing Proceedings

A PR manager for Stonegate Pub Company declined to comment on the specifics of the case, citing ongoing legal proceedings. "Due to ongoing legal proceedings, it would not be appropriate to comment further on the specific circumstances," she stated, leaving many questions unanswered about the future of the pub and the broader implications for similar venues facing rising operational costs.

The closure of Ye Olde Foundry underscores the challenges faced by independent pubs in an era of increasing financial pressures, with community efforts now focused on preserving a piece of Dudley's musical heritage.
