A charming new bakery in Kings Heath is winning hearts with its nostalgic treats and remarkably low prices, where almost everything costs under £3. The Cake Place, located on Dads Lane, offers a delightful range of old-school bakes including crusty cobs, sausage rolls, and classic cakes, all at prices that hark back to simpler times.
Meet the Owners
Sinead Hanihan, 23, and Amber Hickey, 20, are the young entrepreneurs behind this sweet venture. Their friendship began when Sinead worked at another bakery and Amber joined for work experience. Both grew up with single mothers and understand the financial struggles many families face. Amber shared, "We both grew up with single moms and both our moms have four kids, so we completely understand that most single moms can't go into a shop and get something for everyone."
Affordable Treats for Everyone
The Cake Place deliberately avoids the trend of expensive artisan bakes. Instead, it focuses on affordable classics like sponge slabs with sprinkles, lemon drizzle, brownies, and pineapple creams. The most expensive item is a Nutella cookie pie at £3.50, while sausage rolls are just £1.50 and Cornish pasties £2.50. Sinead explained, "When we were younger we remember families struggling. It's not nice going into a shop and not realising prices before you go in and then it being expensive."
A Community Hub
Located on a residential estate, the bakery has quickly become a local favourite. It offers both indoor seating and a sunny cake terrace. The response from neighbours has been overwhelmingly positive, especially on sunny days when families visit after walks in nearby Highbury Park. The bakery opened on March 7, just before the new Pineapple Road train station began service, making it a convenient stop for commuters.
What's on Offer
During a visit, the counter was filled with sausage rolls, steak slices, and pasties, alongside sweet treats like jam and coconut cake, lemon drizzle, pineapple cream, and chocolate concrete. A selection of four items came to just £7.80. Amber noted, "We don't have loads going on, it's just your basic cakes and then here and there we'll throw in something a little bit fancy pants!"
The Cake Place is open on Dads Lane, Birmingham, B13 8PQ, and is proving that affordable, quality baking can bring a community together.
