Lidl has brought back a discontinued ice cream that is sparking nostalgia among shoppers, just as the UK braces for a heatwave with temperatures expected to reach 30°C in some areas. The budget supermarket's exclusive Gelatelli brand has reintroduced the 'UP' push-up ice cream, which features a plastic stick filled with small chocolate dragée sweets reminiscent of the classic Smarties ice cream from childhood.
Shoppers Rush to Lidl
Taking to TikTok, shopper Libby Grimes shared a video of her finding the treat during a recent visit. In the video, she holds up a box of four ice creams, each packaged in a paper cylinder that you push up to eat. The caption reads: "Lidl bringing back the smarties push up ice cream nostalgia," and she added in the post: "Literally taste the same too."
Social Media Frenzy
The video quickly garnered excited comments from viewers. One user wrote: "Stop! Not me a full on adult running to Lidl." Another commented: "The packaging of this is so 90s wth." A third exclaimed: "NO WAY OMGGGG," while others shared sentiments like "nostalgiaaaaa." One person also noted: "They sell the Haribo push up ones in home bargains."
Heatwave Preparation
With the UK expecting a heatwave, many households are stocking up on frozen treats to stay cool. From classic vanilla to cookie dough and peanut butter, there is an ice cream for every taste. The Gelatelli UP ice cream, sold in packs of four for £2.49, is now available in Lidl stores across the UK.
While some countries still sell the original Smarties ice cream, they have been adapted to no longer include the sweets inside the stick. Lidl's version brings back that nostalgic element, delighting shoppers eager to relive childhood memories.
