I went to the opening night of Mamma Mia! at the Hippodrome on May 13, and as a superfan who has seen the stage show multiple times and watched the film over 40 times, I was ready to critique every detail. Yet, I cannot find a single fault with the production. Director Phyllida Lloyd deserves immense praise.
A Night of Glitz and Glamour
ABBA means glitz, glamour, and feel-good music, and the UK tour cast delivered a show-stopping performance. The only downside was the 'no singing' signs at the start, but I understood the reason. Silently bopping in my seat, I settled in for what became my favourite Mamma Mia! performance ever.
Stellar Performances
From the start, Lydia Hunt (Sophie Sheridan) impressed with impeccable vocals, supported by Bibi Jay (Ali) and Eve Parsons (Lisa) in 'Honey, Honey'. The entrance of Donna and the Dynamos was fantastic: Jenn Griffin (Donna), Rosie Glossip (Rosie), and Sarah Earnshaw (Tanya) were electric. 'Dancing Queen' had everyone silently resisting the urge to dance.
The three leading men—Luke Jasztal (Sam Carmichael), Richard Meek (Harry Bright), and Mark Goldthorp (Bill Austin)—embodied their characters perfectly. 'Money, Money, Money' showcased the ensemble's strength and power. Joe Grundy (Sky) and Lydia Hunt delivered a passionate 'Lay All Your Love On Me', enhanced by the ensemble in flippers and diving gear.
Memorable Moments
Sarah Earnshaw and Joseph Vella (Pepper) brought fiery energy and humour to 'Does Your Mother Know'. The emotional highlight was Jenn Griffin and Lydia Hunt's 'Slipping Through My Fingers', which left me in tears. The mother-daughter bond resonated deeply, especially with my mother beside me.
Final Verdict
This was an impeccable performance. I will definitely watch the UK tour again. The show runs at Birmingham Hippodrome until May 30.
