Birmingham's vibrant music scene was on full display as local artist MeMe Detroit delivered a spectacular EP fundraising show at Deadwax in Digbeth. The event, held to support her forthcoming 2026 EP release and launch her latest single 'Good Life (talking 'bout the)', transformed the popular venue into a hub of musical creativity and community spirit on 10th November 2025.
A Night of Two Halves: Acoustic Intimacy and Electric Energy
MeMe Detroit crafted a unique evening divided into two distinct sets, showcasing her versatility as a performer. The first half featured an unplugged acoustic session that allowed the raw emotion of her songwriting to shine through. Backed by band members Kallim McEwan on acoustic guitar and Abbey Welch on bass, the set opened with 'Mean Rock n Roller', transformed into a mellow yet gritty harmony-rich number.
The emotional highlight came when MeMe performed 'How She Runs' as a touching tribute to her late father who passed away earlier in 2025. Her plaintive vocals, combined with Kallim's harmonies, created one of the evening's most moving moments. Perhaps the most visually striking performance saw MeMe singing 'Foxy's Folk Face' from within the audience, accompanied by her husband Neil Drummond on acoustic guitar, with the scene illuminated solely by mobile phone torches.
Special Guests and Community Spirit
The evening became a true celebration of Birmingham's music community as MeMe welcomed several special guests to the stage. Chloe Mogg joined for beautiful vocal harmonies on 'Got A Feeling', while Blue Nation's Luke Weston added mandolin to 'Song for Leils'. The collaboration extended to include Georgia Hardy of Lokko and Creedite bands, who joined for a powerful rendition of 'Mean Rock n Roller'.
Beyond the music, the event featured an art exhibition with pieces created by MeMe herself, some completed on the day of the single launch. A raffle drew enthusiastic participation, compered in inimitable style by Neil Murdock of Blue Nation, while brand-new merchandise gave fans tangible memories of the special evening.
Full Band Energy and Encore Celebration
The second half saw the transformation to full electric energy, with Kallim moving to drums and MeMe switching to electric guitar. The powerful delivery of 'Run Riot' demonstrated how the songs gained new dimensions with the full band treatment. The energy peaked during a mashup of 'Wicked Heat Shaped Game' and a collaborative performance of 'Aerials' featuring Georgia Hardy, Luke Weston on vocals, and Nick Sharman on electric guitar.
The evening culminated with the band's new single 'Good Life (talking 'bout the)' receiving such an enthusiastic response that they returned for an encore performance of the same track. The fundraising success and electric atmosphere suggest Birmingham music fans have much to anticipate from MeMe Detroit's forthcoming EP in 2026.
