Jason Momoa's Unforgettable Black Sabbath Experience in Birmingham
Hollywood superstar Jason Momoa has shared an intimate and heartfelt account of his time hosting Black Sabbath's monumental Back to the Beginning concert at Villa Park last year. The actor, known globally for his role in Aquaman, described a particular moment from the performance that he plans to carry with him for the rest of his life.
A Deep-Rooted Connection to Birmingham and Black Sabbath
Momoa is no stranger to the West Midlands city, having visited on multiple occasions and even earning the affectionate title of an honorary Brummie from local fans. His admiration for rock legends Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath stretches back to his youth, profoundly influencing both his personal and professional life.
This deep connection led to him being invited to host the band's grand show at Villa Park in January, an event that drew thousands to Birmingham's streets. The concert took place just weeks before Ozzy Osbourne's passing, adding a layer of poignancy to Momoa's reflections.
Overcoming Nerves with Brummie Warmth
Speaking at the launch of his Meili vodka brand at Harvey Nichols, Momoa confessed that hosting such a significant rock event was initially terrifying for him. However, he was quick to praise the incredible welcome he received from Birmingham's residents.
"It was terrifying. I needed to get out there, shout out to the world, and Birmingham was there for me, and they were really cool, and they treat me nice," the actor told BirminghamLive.
From Stage to Crowd: A Fan's Perspective
Momoa also addressed his now-famous decision to leave the stage and join the audience during the performance. A viral clip from Pantera's July show had previously captured him enjoying himself among fans, and he brought that same energy to the Black Sabbath event.
"There's a certain point where I was jealous of the crowds, that's why I got my a** in it," he explained, emphasising his desire to experience the concert from the perspective of a genuine fan rather than a host on stage.
The 'Beautiful' Moment to Cherish Forever
The highlight of the evening, however, was a specific, serene moment that Momoa says he will take to his deathbed. As the set drew to a close, he found himself watching Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler from a close vantage point.
"Towards the end I got a really beautiful moment I'll take to my deathbed. I was just watching Ozzy pretty close and being able to just watch him and Geezer [...] and I just love him, love him, love him," he shared emotionally.
He added, "It's nice to be a fanboy. It just comes from your heart and here's the eight year old me freaking out." Momoa concluded his remarks with a simple yet sincere message: "Thank you, Birmingham."
This experience not only solidified his bond with the city but also provided a lasting memory from one of rock music's most iconic bands, captured forever in the heart of a Hollywood fan.
