The series finale of Prime Video's hit superhero drama The Boys delivered shocking twists, including the long-awaited comeuppance of psychotic supe Homelander (Antony Starr) at the hands of Billy Butcher (Karl Urban). However, fans were left wondering why former hero Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) was once again absent from the last-ever episode.
What Happened to Queen Maeve in The Boys?
Sadly, Queen Maeve failed to appear in the closing episode of The Boys, having been absent from the show throughout the previous two seasons. While many viewers anticipated a surprise cameo from the Wonder Woman-esque heroine with extraordinary super-strength, she has remained retired and off the radar since her final appearance at the close of season three.
Throughout her time on the show, Maeve grew increasingly disillusioned with her role as a superhero, largely due to the Seven's leader and her former boyfriend Homelander's deeply sadistic conduct. In the third season finale, she opted to relinquish her powers to assist in defeating Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) before staging her death to live quietly away from public scrutiny with her girlfriend Elena (Nicola Correia-Damude). Her ultimate confrontation wasn't without consequences, as she also lost an eye during a brutal clash with Homelander.
Showrunner Eric Kripke Explains Maeve's Absence
The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that he "would have loved" to have McElligott return for a cameo, though the Irish actress is "mostly retired" from acting. Her most recent credit was voicing Maeve in the 2022 animated spin-off The Boys Presents: Diabolical.
"Her schedule didn't work out," Kripke disclosed to Gold Derby. "It was all a very friendly, non-controversial thing. I was like, 'If we wrote it, would you do it?' And she's like, 'I'm kind of out of it, and I'm busy, and unfortunately I can't, but send everyone my love.' That was sort of it."
Maeve's Influence Referenced in Finale
While Maeve herself didn't feature, her influence in the series was referenced by Starlight (Erin Moriarty) when she discussed with Gen V's Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) what she learned from her as a fresh Seven recruit. "Never meet your heroes," Starlight confesses. "She was bitter, she was checked out. She gave away so many parts of herself, there was nothing left. I swore to myself I would never let that happen to me, but it did."
The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video.
