Scott Mills Speaks Out After Sudden BBC Radio 2 Sacking

Scott Mills has publicly addressed his dismissal from BBC Radio 2 for the first time, following his abrupt removal from air last week. The DJ was taken off his show suddenly after hosting on Tuesday, March 24, and did not return as scheduled, sparking widespread speculation.

Statement Addresses Historic Allegations and Police Investigation

In a detailed statement, Mills confirmed that the Metropolitan Police had issued a statement relating to him, concerning an allegation of a historic sexual offence made in 2016. He stated that he fully cooperated with the police investigation, which concluded in 2018 when the Crown Prosecution Service determined there was insufficient evidence to bring charges.

"An allegation was made against me in 2016 of a historic sexual offence which was the subject of a police investigation in which I fully cooperated and responded to in 2018," Mills said. "As the police have stated, a file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which determined that the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges."

He expressed hope that the public and media would respect his wish not to comment further, given the allegation dates back nearly 30 years and the investigation closed seven years ago. Mills also thanked his former colleagues and listeners for their support.

BBC Confirms Decisive Action Based on New Information

The BBC confirmed that they "acted decisively" after obtaining new information in the weeks leading up to Mills' dismissal, terminating his contracts on Friday, March 27. A spokesperson acknowledged Mills' long and popular career at the BBC but emphasized the need to be mindful of the rights of those involved.

"What we can confirm is that in recent weeks, we obtained new information relating to Scott and we spoke directly with him," the spokesperson said. "As a result, the BBC acted decisively in line with our culture and values, and terminated his contracts on Friday March 27."

Separately, the BBC noted they were made aware in 2017 of an ongoing police investigation, which closed in 2019 with no arrest or charges. They are conducting further work to understand what was known at the time.

Background on Allegations and Mills' Career

According to reports, the allegations involve a teenage boy under 16 and are said to have occurred between 1997 and 2000. Mills, 53, from Southampton, had taken over the Radio 2 breakfast show from Zoe Ball last year, calling it a "dream come true." His annual salary was reported to be between £355,000 and £359,999 in July 2025.

The Mirror disclosed that Mills was interrogated in 2018 over the historical allegations, with the investigation starting in 2016 and concluding in 2019 after the CPS found insufficient evidence. This development has shocked many listeners and colleagues, highlighting the ongoing impact of such cases in the media industry.
