BBC Radio 2 Terminates Scott Mills' Contract Following Historic Allegation
The BBC has confirmed the dismissal of Radio 2 presenter Scott Mills over allegations concerning a male relationship from more than ten years ago. According to reports from the Mirror, the broadcaster cited "personal conduct" as the reason for his sudden departure.
Official Confirmation and Sudden Exit
A BBC spokesperson stated: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.” Mills presented his final show last Tuesday, where he signed off with the words: "I'm getting everything mixed up today," adding, "I should probably go, I'll try again tomorrow." The following day, he was replaced without warning by colleague Gary Davies.
Internal Announcement and Staff Reaction
Lorna Clarke, Director of Music at the BBC, informed staff in a statement: “I wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the Breakfast show, and the BBC. I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock. Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programmes on R1, 5Live, R2 and TV.” Mills, who earned nearly £360,000 annually with the broadcaster, has been a prominent figure across BBC platforms.
Impact on Upcoming Projects
The sacking has immediate repercussions for Mills' professional commitments:
- Podcast Cancellation: Just weeks prior, Mills was announced as a host for Race Across The World's spin-off podcast, The Detour, alongside former contestant Alfie Watts. This project is now in jeopardy.
- EastEnders Crisis: The New Year’s Day 2026 episode of EastEnders, which features a cameo from Mills, is set a year in the future. In the episode, Mills delivers a radio message to Max Branning. A source commented: “It won’t have a huge impact on the episode – even if he was set to reprise his role again. Bosses were clear that on New Year’s Day 2027 you’ll see everything that happened in the episode from a different perspective so it wouldn’t be a big loss for him not to feature again.”
The abrupt termination highlights the BBC's stringent policies on personal conduct, even regarding historical matters, and leaves Mills' future in broadcasting uncertain.
