BBC Radio 2 Dismisses Scott Mills Following Personal Conduct Investigation
In a dramatic and unexpected development, BBC Radio 2 has terminated the contract of presenter Scott Mills over matters related to his personal conduct. The decision means Mills will no longer host his popular breakfast show on the station, marking a sudden end to his tenure.
Official Statement Confirms Departure
The BBC released a brief statement regarding the situation, stating: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.” This confirmation came after internal communications revealed the dismissal.
Lorna Clarke, the Director of Music at the BBC, personally informed staff members about Mills' departure. In her statement, she acknowledged the shocking nature of the news, writing: “I wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the Breakfast show, and the BBC. I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock.”
Clarke further emphasized Mills' long history with the corporation, noting his work across various BBC platforms including Radio 1, 5 Live, Radio 2, and television programming. She stated she felt it was important to share this information with colleagues at the earliest opportunity.
Audience Figures and Recent Performance
Scott Mills had been experiencing growing listener numbers on his Radio 2 breakfast show prior to his dismissal. According to recent audience data, his program attracted an average weekly audience of 6.47 million listeners during the October-December period. This represented an increase from 6.16 million in the previous quarter and marked his highest figures since taking over the breakfast show in early 2025.
Despite this growth, Mills' audience numbers remained slightly below those achieved by his predecessor Zoe Ball. During Ball's final quarter on the show in October-December 2024, the average weekly audience reached 6.83 million listeners.
Radio 2's Broader Context
The dismissal comes during what has generally been a successful period for Radio 2. Last month, Helen Thomas, head of Radio 2, highlighted the station's continued dominance in UK radio listening figures. She noted that Radio 2 remains the most listened-to single radio station in the country.
Thomas specifically mentioned Vernon Kay's program as the most listened-to show on UK radio, with weekly audiences growing to 6.7 million listeners. She also praised Radio 2 listeners for tuning in for just over 11 hours each week on average, describing this as a four-year record for the station.
The station has recently celebrated other successes, including Sara Cox's fundraising efforts where she ran five marathons in five days, raising an astonishing £12 million for Children In Need with listener support.
The sudden departure of Scott Mills represents a significant change for Radio 2's breakfast programming and leaves questions about who might replace him in this coveted time slot.
