I attended a performance of Waitress the Musical at the Birmingham Hippodrome in the city centre with exceptionally high expectations, having heard nothing but praise for the show. I know this production inspires obsessions in some of my friends, and I am familiar with the powerhouse ballad 'She Used To Be Mine'. As I took my seat, I was charged with excitement.
A Stunning Musical Delight
Waitress is a stunning and cackling aloud musical delight, warm and steaming like a fresh pie of your choice. Carrie Hope Fletcher, with stage credits for some of the best ladies in the West End, shone and made the songs sound effortless. The entire cast, both foreground and background, were immensely talented and delivered a slick show worthy of the big stage. The harmonies were buttery and full of emotion, and the supporting characters were sweet as sugar, working seamlessly as a team to bring the story to life.
Standout Performances
Les Dennis played the slightly grumpy but ultimately lovable diner owner Joe. Evelyn Hoskins had me cackling as the meek but adorable Dawn, and what a set of pipes she has! The standout for me was Sandra Marvin as Becky, a confident, cheeky, and scene-stealing best friend with a secret.
Waitress is the perfect hope-core musical for all the family, offering an ideal mix of highs and lows to bring joy into your life. The show will be at the Birmingham Hippodrome until May 2 and will continue around the UK.
