Miranda Hart Reportedly in Talks to Host Strictly Come Dancing
Comedian Miranda Hart has reportedly entered into discussions with BBC executives to potentially host the popular television show Strictly Come Dancing. This development comes as the program seeks a replacement for longtime host Claudia Winkleman, who announced her departure alongside co-host Tess Daly in December.
Replacing a Television Icon
Claudia Winkleman, 54, and Tess Daly, 57, made their joint announcement to step down from the BBC dance competition after years of presenting together. While Miranda Hart's name had not been prominently mentioned for the role until recently, sources indicate she has been under consideration due to her longstanding professional relationship with Claudia Winkleman.
A source close to the situation told The Sun newspaper: "The feeling is that her style of comedy is very similar to Claudia's sense of humour, making her a perfect replacement." The source further explained that producers are seeking someone who can bring a comedic element to the hosting role, noting Miranda Hart's loyalty to the BBC throughout her television career.
Return to Public Life After Health Struggles
Miranda Hart's potential return to the spotlight comes after significant health challenges that kept her largely out of public view for years. The comedian has been battling chronic health conditions including Lyme disease and myalgic encephalomyelitis, commonly known as ME or chronic fatigue syndrome.
These conditions left her bedbound and housebound for extended periods, with Hart describing her current approach to life as taking things "one day at a time" as she gradually returns to public engagements. Her potential casting as Strictly Come Dancing host would mark a significant comeback to mainstream television.
Why Miranda Hart Fits the Role
According to insiders, several factors make Miranda Hart an appealing candidate for the hosting position. The source explained: "She's also one of very few people in the entertainment world who is widely known and recognised by just her first name." This level of recognition is considered valuable for a show that relies heavily on presenter chemistry and audience familiarity.
The source emphasized that producers want someone who can maintain the show's established tone while bringing their own personality to the role. Miranda Hart's background in comedy and her previous work with the BBC are seen as significant advantages in this regard.
Strictly Come Dancing in Transition
The potential host change comes during a period of significant transition for Strictly Come Dancing. Beyond the departure of Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, the forthcoming series will also see changes among the professional dancer lineup. Several dancers including Michelle Tsiakkas, Karen Hauer, Nadiya Bychkova, Luba Mushtuk and Gorka Marquez will not be returning for the next season.
Earlier this month, it emerged that Michelle Tsiakkas had chosen to leave the Strictly Come Dancing live tour after discovering her contract would not be extended. She had been scheduled to appear alongside fellow professional dancers in the stage version of the BBC program in April before withdrawing.
When contacted by The Mirror for comment on the hosting speculation, a BBC spokesman stated: "Plans for Strictly Come Dancing 2026 will be confirmed in due course." This standard response neither confirms nor denies the ongoing discussions with Miranda Hart, leaving the door open for further announcements about the show's future presentation team.
