Pupil Takes the Reins: 10-Year-Old Marcos Leads Larchwood Primary for a Day
10-Year-Old Marcos Becomes Headteacher for a Day at Brentwood School

In a delightful twist on school leadership, the corridors of Larchwood Primary School in Brentwood recently saw a youthful face at the helm. For one memorable day, 10-year-old Marcos, affectionately known as Mr Melendez, stepped into the role of headteacher, bringing fresh energy and enthusiasm to the position.

A Dream Opportunity Won Through a Festive Raffle

Marcos, a Year 5 pupil, secured this unique chance by winning a raffle at the school's bustling Christmas market. The prize allowed him to swap his usual classroom seat for the headteacher's office, taking over from the regular incumbent, Steve Bowsher. This innovative initiative not only sparked excitement but also provided a hands-on learning experience in leadership and responsibility.

A Day Packed with Headteacher Duties

Throughout his tenure, Marcos embraced a full schedule of responsibilities typically handled by senior staff. His day began with a warm welcome to pupils at the school gate, setting a positive tone for the morning. He then presented the headteacher's award, met with school governors, and handled administrative tasks such as making phone calls, writing for the newsletter, and sending emails.

Adding a personal touch, Marcos also led a Spanish lesson, showcasing his linguistic skills and engaging his peers in a fun, educational activity. Beyond the formal duties, he spread joy by treating pupils and teachers to biscuits, chocolate, and drinks, and generously granted an extra 10 minutes of playtime. To cap off his day, he announced a 'Wear Any Shoes' event, further boosting morale and creativity among the school community.

Confidence and Belonging Shine Through

Dressed in a new suit for the occasion, Marcos reflected on the experience with enthusiasm. He shared, "Everyone was excited when I gave them treats. I said to Mr Bowsher, I would like to win this opportunity again - he said the school would be in good hands." His confidence was particularly noteworthy, as Marcos has only been in England since last summer, yet he seamlessly integrated into the role, demonstrating a strong sense of belonging.

Steve Bowsher, the usual headteacher, praised Marcos's performance, noting, "Marcos had a great day. He said it was like his dreams." He added, "The rest of the school all saw what a great day he had; it was a lot of fun for him and everyone else." This event not only provided Marcos with a memorable experience but also highlighted the value of student involvement in school governance, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment at Larchwood Primary.
