Blaengwawr Primary's Past Pupil Donna Ockenden Returns, Inspires with £1k Donation
Past pupil's inspiring return to Blaengwawr Primary School

The Aberaman community was recently filled with excitement as Blaengwawr Primary School opened its doors to a distinguished former student. Donna Ockenden, who attended the school during the 1960s and 1970s, returned to offer current pupils a vivid look at how education has transformed over the decades, while also discovering the enduring values that connect generations.

A Walk Through Time: From Blackboards to Interactive Screens

The memorable day commenced with a formal welcome from the school's Head Boy and Head Girl, who guided Donna on a tour of the modern facilities. She observed the evolution from the simple classrooms of her childhood to today's vibrant learning spaces, noting the widespread use of new technology by the children. The contrast between past and present was a central theme of her visit.

Donna then met with the school's Wellbeing Warriors, a pupil-led group focused on promoting kindness and mental health. In a lively question-and-answer session, she shared anecdotes about school life in her era, describing close-knit family routines and the powerful sense of community in Aberaman. She brought a cherished photo album, which sparked curiosity and laughter as pupils compared images from the past with their present-day experiences.

An Inspiring Assembly and a Lasting Motto

Later, the entire school assembled to hear Donna deliver a special presentation. Her photographs and stories painted a vivid picture of playground games, friendships, and lessons. She recounted how, at just three years old, she decided to become a midwife—a dream she later achieved.

Her determination was guided by her family motto: 'Be the best you can be'. This powerful phrase has now been formally adopted by Blaengwawr Primary as a guiding principle and written into the school's expectations for this academic year. Donna explained how this value drove her career, from midwifery to her current work chairing significant government reviews into maternity care and her role as a community activist.

Legacy and Community Ties Strengthened

During break time, Donna went outside to see how her generous £1,000 donation had been spent. New equipment, including football goals and outdoor board games, has revitalised playtimes, with many children personally thanking her. In a remarkable coincidence, one Year 6 pupil was amazed to learn Donna had grown up in the very same house they live in today. They took a short walk to see the property, exchanging memories and noting how it had changed.

Reflecting on the visit, Headteacher Naomi Poole said: "It was an absolute privilege to welcome one of our past pupils back to Blaengwawr. Donna's stories brought history to life for our children and reminded us all of the importance of community and kindness." She added that such events highlight both the progress in education and the timeless values at the school's heart.

As her visit concluded, Donna reflected: "Schools may change, but the heart of learning - the joy, the friendships, and the sense of belonging - remains the same." Her words and motto are set to continue inspiring pupils, aligning with the school's current half-term value of 'belonging' or 'cynefin'. Donna expressed her lifelong fondness for the school and her commitment to supporting it now and in the future.
