Sefton School of the Year 2026 Awards Launched to Honour Community Impact
Sefton School of the Year 2026 Awards Launched

The prestigious Sefton School of the Year 2026 Awards have officially been launched, marking the beginning of a heartfelt search to recognise and celebrate the exceptional educational institutions across the borough. This initiative, a key category within the broader Grand Pride of Sefton Awards, will see three finalists invited to a gala event at The Grand in Southport, where one outstanding school will be crowned the winner. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, April 24, 2026, in the elegant Princess Grace Suite, promising an unforgettable night of celebration and recognition.

Sponsorship and Community Focus

Southport Education Group, which operates Southport College and KGV Sixth Form College in Southport, is proudly sponsoring the School of the Year Award for the fourth consecutive year. This sponsorship underscores a deep commitment to fostering positive educational experiences that leave a lasting impact on young people. Michelle Brabner, Principal of Southport Education Group, emphasised the importance of this support, stating that it honours the dedication and passion of local schools as they inspire and support children and families throughout the community.

The award criteria extend beyond mere academic performance, highlighting the vital role schools play in supporting the borough's young people and families. Organisers are keen to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Sefton's educators, recognising that schools are often at the heart of community resilience and cohesion.

Reflecting on Past Honourees

Last year's recipient, Churchtown Primary School in Southport, serves as a poignant example of community spirit in the face of adversity. Following the tragic events of summer 2024, the school opened its doors to provide a sanctuary for children, staff, and families to grieve and connect. In a remarkable display of solidarity, the school campaigned alongside families to raise a quarter of a million pounds, resulting in the creation of a stunning new playground and library dedicated to the memory of the girls lost in the Southport tragedy. These facilities were opened in September, symbolising hope and remembrance.

Finalists from Previous Years

Other notable finalists have demonstrated innovative approaches to community engagement and safety. Kew Woods Primary School in Southport pioneered the #kNOwKnifeCrime campaign, inspiring 81 schools and 35,000 pupils to participate in a mini marathon event across Sefton. This effort raised over £30,000, enabling every participating school to install bleed control kits and cabinets, while educating pupils aged 8-16 about the dangers of knife crime and life-saving skills.

Maghull High School also stood out for its community projects, including a 'reverse advent calendar' where students collected food donations daily for the South Sefton Foodbank before Christmas. These initiatives reflect the school's ethos, encapsulated in the Maghull High Way, which teaches students to respect their community both in and out of school.

A Night of Celebration and Recognition

The Grand Pride of Sefton Awards, organised by Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group and Stand Up For Southport, with support from Media Partner In Demand Radio, promises to be an unmissable event in the Liverpool city region's calendar. Actress and radio personality Claire Simmo will host the evening, which includes a special celebratory meal for all shortlisted nominees and a night of entertainment. The awards aim to honour individuals and groups who go above and beyond to make Sefton a special place for all.

Nominations are currently being invited across all 13 categories, with a closing date of March 1, 2026. Organisers encourage submissions from across Southport, Formby, Crosby, Bootle, Maghull, and other areas within the borough of Sefton, seeking to highlight the diverse contributions that enrich the community.
