Churchtown Primary School Honoured with Inspiring Play Award for New Playground

Churchtown Primary School, part of the Endeavour Learning Trust, has been awarded the Inspiring Play Award at the Youth Sports Trust Awards this month. This prestigious recognition celebrates the school's new playground, which was constructed following a major fundraising campaign in 2025.

A Tribute to Alice and Bebe

The playground was designed in memory of Alice Da Silva Aguiar and Bebe King, two Churchtown pupils who tragically lost their lives during the Southport attack in 2024. It incorporates elements reflecting their personalities, including quiet spaces for reflection and a performance stage inspired by their love of the performing arts.

Celebrating Impactful Change

The Youth Sports Trust Awards acknowledge schools, trusts, and individuals who have made a real and impactful difference in the lives of young people over the past year. Churchtown's playground was specifically recognised for inspiring play among students, championing the power of unstructured, student-led activities.

This approach highlights the importance of free play in developing creativity, social skills, and a lifelong love of being active. The playground, officially opened in September 2025, has since been visited by Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales and is now filled with the joyful sounds of children playing.

Headteacher's Delight

Jinnie Payne, headteacher at Churchtown Primary School, expressed her delight that the spirit of unity behind the playground has been recognised. She stated, "When we set out to build this playground in collaboration with the parents of Alice and Bebe, we wanted it to be a symbol of hope in the face of adversity for a school that was beginning to try and heal."

She added, "Now it's complete, I'm delighted every time I see hundreds of children expressing themselves, enjoying themselves and showing the joy that Alice and Bebe always carried with them. We're very pleased to accept this award and hope the impact of the playground will continue to be felt across decades at Churchtown."

The playground stands as a testament to community resilience and the enduring legacy of two young lives, inspiring play and healing for generations to come.
