Nine-Year-Old's Film Offers Personal Insight into Autism and ADHD Life

A new short film created by a nine-year-old boy from Essex is set to provide a unique and deeply personal look into life with Autism and ADHD. SEND Sensation, a local partnership supporting children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, has announced the launch of this film starring Alex, a young ambassador who lives with these conditions.

Project Aims to Foster Understanding

The project aims to give families, professionals, and the wider public a better understanding of neurodiversity by highlighting real, lived experiences. Through Alex’s viewpoint, viewers are invited to see the world from a different perspective—one that is often underrepresented. By placing a camera directly in Alex's hands, the charity offers a direct window into his world.

Background of SEND Sensation

SEND Sensation, established in 2023, brings together a network of local organisations to provide inclusive clubs and activities for children and young people with SEND across Mid and North Essex. The partnership focuses on:

  • Creating accessible opportunities
  • Empowering families
  • Promoting positive, inclusive communities

Alex’s films form part of the organisation’s wider Autism awareness work, designed to spark conversation, build empathy, and support greater understanding across communities.

Voices from the Team

Laura, co-production lead at SEND Sensation, said: “Listening to the voices of children and young people is at the heart of what we do. Alex’s film is a powerful reminder that every child experiences the world differently—and that those perspectives matter. We hope this film helps people see, understand, and support neurodivergent young people in a more meaningful way. It was an absolute pleasure to be part of the ‘film crew’ with Alex and his mother, Victoria. I am looking forward to seeing what this remarkable young man does in the future!”

Future Plans and Launch Details

In addition to launching this film, Alex has received a GoPro to capture his adventures in the future. By placing the camera in Alex’s hands, SEND Sensation aims to showcase more of his work and offer a direct window into his experiences—capturing moments of joy, challenge, curiosity, and connection.

The first film, an interview with Alex, has been released this week to tie in with World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, as part of SEND Sensation’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and celebrate neurodiversity across Essex.
