Southview School in Witham has taken a significant step forward in preparing its students for adulthood by launching a dedicated business hub. This innovative initiative provides valuable work experience opportunities for students with physical and neurological impairments, aged three to 19, helping them develop essential skills for meaningful lives beyond education.
A Purpose-Built Space for Real-World Learning
The school has constructed a modern meeting and conference room that is available for hire by local businesses. This new facility serves as a practical training ground for older students, who are involved in various tasks such as setting up the room for meetings, organising furniture and equipment, managing resources, packing away after events, and performing cleaning duties.
Developing Key Skills for the Future
Through this hands-on work, students enhance critical abilities including teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and independent living skills. Kayleigh Bunce, the business development lead at Southview School, emphasised the importance of this environment.
"As part of developing their independence and preparing for adulthood, our students have been taking part in meaningful work experience within our purpose-built hire space, which is regularly used for meetings and events," said Mrs Bunce.
She added, "This wonderful environment gives our students the chance to take on real responsibilities that mirror workplace expectations. These experiences are giving students a genuine sense of achievement and confidence, and we're incredibly proud of the effort they've shown."

Mrs Bunce is actively encouraging local businesses to hire the room, highlighting the mutual benefits. "By utilising this space, you provide our students with valuable work experience opportunities. This helps them to develop a strong work ethic and independent, career-related skills that will benefit them long after they leave Southview," she explained.
