The Met Office has issued a new weather alert for Birmingham, extending the existing heat warning by an additional 24 hours. A red warning for extreme heat remains in effect from 9am on Wednesday, June 24, until 9pm on Thursday, June 25. Now, an amber warning has been added for Friday, June 26, covering the period from midnight to 11.59pm.
Forecast Details for Birmingham
Forecasters predict continued hot and humid conditions, with exceptionally warm temperatures both day and night. For Wednesday, the Met Office expects dry weather with strong sunshine, temperatures rising to a maximum of 34°C, and high humidity in the afternoon. The night will stay dry and very warm, with a minimum of 19°C.
Thursday is set to be even hotter, with extreme heat continuing and high humidity. Maximum temperatures could reach 38°C, with some cloudier intervals possible in the afternoon. The outlook for Friday to Sunday shows another hot day on Friday, with temperatures gradually decreasing over the weekend. There is a risk of thunderstorms at times, but overall dry and sunny weather is expected.
Impacts and Advice
The amber warning indicates that population-wide adverse health effects are likely, not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, potentially leading to serious illness or danger to life. Substantial changes in working practices and daily routines are likely required. There is also a risk of failure of heat-sensitive systems and equipment, including possible loss of power, water, electricity, gas, or mobile phone services.
Additionally, significantly more people are expected to visit coastal areas, lakes, and rivers, increasing the risk of water safety incidents. Delays on roads and road closures are possible, along with delays and cancellations to rail and air travel, with potential welfare issues for those experiencing even moderate delays.
