A 'living roof' bus stop has been installed in Bacup as part of a small programme to introduce greener, more biodiverse infrastructure across the borough. The new shelter, located on Market Street, features a specially designed roof planted with low-growing, drought-tolerant species that support pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and moths. The mix of sedum and wildflower species was chosen for its resilience, ability to thrive in urban conditions, and minimal maintenance requirements.
Benefits of Bee Bus Stops
Often known as 'bee bus stops', these installations help increase urban biodiversity, absorb rainwater, and improve air quality. The initiative aims to bring nature back into town centres while supporting local wildlife.
Future Locations
Rossendale Borough Council has identified two further locations for similar shelters: one in Waterfoot and another in Haslingden. The bus stops are supplied by Bauer Media Outdoor, whose design is used by councils across the UK as a simple way to introduce green space into urban areas.
Community Impact
Councillor Nick Harris commented: "Small changes add up. These living roof bus stops bring nature back into our streets, support pollinators, and make our public spaces more attractive." The project highlights the council's commitment to environmental sustainability and community wellbeing.
