UK Snow Alert: 792-Mile Blanket to Cover Nation, Only Two Cities Spared
UK faces 792-mile snow blanket, only two cities spared

The United Kingdom is bracing for a major winter weather event, with forecasts predicting a colossal 792-mile swathe of snow will sweep from the south coast of England to the northern tip of Scotland.

Nationwide Snow Event Set to Strike

Maps from WX Charts, which utilise data from Met Desk, indicate that snow will cover almost the entire country. The advanced GFS modelling system shows weather maps turning purple and white, signalling the imminent arrival of widespread snowfall.

The significant weather event is projected to begin at midnight on Wednesday, January 8, and could persist for a period spanning over 72 hours. This prolonged snowfall is expected to lead to substantial accumulations across many regions.

Expected Snow Depths and Key Risk Areas

According to snow depth charts, the heaviest accumulations are forecast for mid-Wales, where depths could reach 3cm. Both south and north Wales are predicted to see snowfall at a rate of 1mm per hour.

Other areas identified as being at high risk include:

  • Northern England
  • The South East
  • The South West
  • The East Midlands

In these regions, approximately 2cm of snow is likely to fall, with Greater London also facing a significant risk. The rest of Northern England, Wales, and Scotland will all be covered, with depths expected to reach up to 3cm in places.

Only Two English Cities Forecast to Escape

By January 9, nearly the entire UK is expected to be under a blanket of snow. The only two areas in England currently forecast to be spared the worst of the accumulations are along the south coast, specifically the major cities of Bournemouth and Brighton.

The Met Office, in its forecast for mid-to-late January, states: "Whilst confidence in details is low, by the start of this period the transition back to westerly winds bringing Atlantic weather systems into the UK is expected to be complete, with temperatures most likely recovering to around average." The forecast also notes an increased chance of frost and fog during nighttime hours.

Public Health Warnings Issued

In response to the impending cold snap, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued two amber cold health alerts. These warnings cover north-east and north-west England and will be active from 8pm on Sunday until midday on Monday, January 5.

The agency has warned that the expected low temperatures will likely lead to increased pressure on healthcare services as vulnerable people seek help. There is also a heightened risk of a rise in mortality rates, particularly among those aged 65 and over or individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Residents across the UK are advised to monitor official forecasts from the Met Office and prepare for potentially disruptive travel conditions and very cold weather from January 8 onwards.
