Heatwave to Break in West Midlands from Thursday
The Met Office has announced that the current heatwave in the West Midlands will begin to ease from Thursday, with temperatures dropping from the high 20s and low 30s Celsius to the mid-20s. The region has been experiencing exceptionally hot weather, with temperatures reaching 30°C in some areas, prompting health warnings and advice to stay hydrated and avoid the sun during peak hours.
Thunderstorms Possible as Temperatures Drop
Alongside the temperature drop, the Met Office has warned of potential thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon and evening. These could bring heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds, which may cause localised flooding and travel disruption. The change is due to a cold front moving in from the Atlantic, pushing the hot air eastwards.
Impact on Daily Life and Health
The heatwave has led to increased pressure on health services, with hospitals and GP surgeries seeing more cases of heat exhaustion and dehydration. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a Level 3 Heat-Health Alert for the West Midlands, urging people to check on vulnerable relatives and neighbours. Schools have also taken measures to keep children cool, with some allowing pupils to wear summer uniforms and ensuring access to water.
Forecast for the Weekend
By Friday and into the weekend, temperatures are expected to settle around 22-24°C, with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers. The Met Office advises that while the heatwave is breaking, the weather will remain unsettled, so people should be prepared for sudden changes.
Advice from Public Health Officials
Dr. Lisa McNally, Director of Public Health for Sandwell, said: “While the worst of the heat is behind us, we still advise people to take care as temperatures remain above average. Stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid alcohol and caffeine. If you feel unwell, seek medical advice.”
