Torfaen's Annual Spring Clean Yields Over 100 Bags of Rubbish in Major Community Effort

In a significant display of community spirit, Torfaen's annual Spring Clean has successfully concluded, with volunteers collecting more than 100 bags of rubbish from five designated litter hot spots across the borough. This year's cleanup, organized in partnership with the environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy, targeted areas including Northville, Cwmbran Boating Lake, Cold Barn Farm, Garn Lakes, and Pontypool, all of which were carefully selected to be accessible for volunteers with mobility issues.

Diverse Range of Litter Items Removed

The cleanup efforts uncovered a wide array of discarded items, such as cans, plastic waste, a scooter, and even a solitary bike wheel, highlighting the varied nature of litter plaguing local environments. Daniel Hodson, the Landscape and Recreation Policy and Partnerships Manager for Torfaen, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants, stating, "Thank you to everyone who took the time to volunteer and clean up litter hot spot areas as part of this year's Torfaen Spring Clean." He also acknowledged the ongoing contributions of individuals and community groups who engage in litter picking throughout the year, emphasizing that their hard work is deeply appreciated.

Addressing the Dangers of Litter

Hodson further underscored the serious implications of litter, noting that it is not only unsightly and unhygienic but also poses significant risks to wildlife. He pointed out that with over 700 bins available across Torfaen, there is no excuse for littering. As part of the Torfaen Deal initiative, the council is committed to supporting residents and groups interested in organizing their own litter picks, offering advice and guidance on borrowing necessary equipment.
