Met Office Predicts 'Above Average' Temperatures for March as 17C Heat Blast to Hit UK

After months of persistent wet and blustery conditions, the Met Office is forecasting a significant shift in weather patterns for the start of March, with high pressure expected to dominate and bring above-average temperatures across the UK. This change promises a welcome respite from the recent rainfall, offering drier conditions and some sunshine.

Warm Weather on the Horizon

According to the latest forecasts, temperatures are predicted to reach the high teens, with maps from WXCharts indicating that parts of the UK, including some areas of the West Midlands, could experience highs of 17C on March 13. This could make these regions warmer than popular holiday destinations like Benidorm on that date, highlighting the unusual warmth expected.

The Met Office's outlook for March 4 to 13 suggests that high pressure will largely control the weather, particularly in the south and southeast of the UK. This setup is likely to result in many places enjoying plenty of dry weather, with variable cloud cover and periods of sunshine. The best of the sunshine is anticipated towards the south or southeast, though overnight fog may occur in some areas.

Regional Variations and Later Changes

However, the forecast is not uniformly dry across the entire country. Frontal systems are still expected to affect the north and west of the UK at times, potentially bringing brief spells of rain, strong winds, and even a little snow to higher ground in the north. Despite this, temperatures overall are projected to be near or above normal, with patchy overnight frost remaining a possibility in certain locations.

As March progresses, the weather pattern is predicted to become more unsettled. The forecast for March 14 to 28 indicates that conditions will remain most unsettled in the west and northwest, while the east and southeast continue to experience drier and brighter weather. Confidence in the late-March forecast is lower, but there is a trend toward more blocked and slow-moving weather patterns. This could lead to either cyclonic, unsettled conditions or anti-cyclonic, more settled and potentially colder patterns near the UK.

In general, some rain is still probable during this period, but the distribution of wetter areas is highly uncertain. Temperatures are expected to remain near or above average overall, with a slightly increasing chance of colder trends toward the end of the month. This forecast comes as a relief after months of damp weather, offering hope for early spring warmth and drier days ahead.
