The date of the first 30C heatwave of the summer has been brought forward in the UK, with new forecasts indicating the threshold could be breached before the end of May. Initial predictions from meteorologists had suggested that temperatures would not reach 30C until June or July.
Early Heat Predictions
According to WX Charts, which uses GFS modelling and Met Desk data, 30C heat is now forecast for London and southern England in the latter part of May. Maximum temperature projections for May 28 show potential peaks of 30C just west of London. The GFS model indicates that up to 20 counties could experience temperatures of 27C or higher during a five-day period.
Met Office Outlook
The Met Office has also indicated that the UK could see a welcome change in weather, with temperatures potentially soaring into the mid-20s in time for the late May bank holiday weekend. Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth said: "By the end of next week and the start of the bank holiday weekend, temperatures could be above average, possibly in the low 20s for some areas."
Ms Shuttleworth cautioned that as the forecast is 10 days away, there are details to be worked out. However, she added: "Whatever position that high pressure brings – all of them bring less cloud, a little bit more sunshine, and lighter winds, which means temperatures will be on the rise through next week."
She further explained: "From Thursday onwards, temperatures could rise above average, approaching 20 degrees for some across southern areas. We could be closer to the mid 20s, possibly, for some areas, in the South East, by the bank holiday weekend."
June Outlook
The first outlook for June, covering June 1 to June 12, from the Met Office states: "Whilst further rain and showers are possible at times, there is also likely to be spells of fine and dry weather. Patterns which bring more settled weather are more likely to dominate towards the end of May across southern areas with more unsettled spells of weather likely to be focused further north."
"Into June, more mixed conditions are likely with spells of rain and showers, but also some drier weather at times. Temperatures are most likely to be near or slightly above average overall, with some warm weather possible at times."
