Unsurprisingly, rain has been a persistent issue this week, but it has not dampened the spirits of the hardy Rossendale Ramblers group. On Wednesday, a determined group of 16 ramblers set off from Whitaker Park for a 10-mile walk around the scenic Rossendale Valley.
Historic and Clerical Highlights
The walk had a distinctly clerical feel, as it included visits to the Friends’ Meeting House, Goodshaw Chapel, and the Quaker Burial Ground. These historic sites provided a fascinating glimpse into the area's rich heritage, blending exercise with education.
It was a similar story on Sunday, following a gloriously sunny Saturday, when 13 walkers turned out for a six-mile walk starting from Barrowford. Beginning and finishing on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, this country walk was rather muddy underfoot, adding an extra challenge to the adventure.
Muddy Trails and Friendly Encounters
The walk leader noted that the group 'plodged' through a field occupied by horses, embracing the messy conditions with good humor. A true highlight of the walk was encountering a flock of Valais Blacknose sheep, a Swiss breed renowned for their almost dog-like friendliness, which brought smiles to all participants.
Upcoming Walks for Late February
Looking ahead, the Rossendale Ramblers have announced several upcoming walks to welcome the early signs of spring. On Saturday, February 21, they invite everyone to join one of their very sociable two-hour pub walks, this time starting from Clowbridge.
This walk will take participants up to the 'golf ball' weather station on Hameldon Hill, offering panoramic views, before returning to the pub for optional lunch and refreshments, perfect for a relaxed weekend outing.
Family-Friendly and Historic Routes
On the following day, Sunday, February 22, the group offers a six-mile walk from Sharneyford. This route includes Green’s Clough, the site of the last coal mine in Lancashire, Heald Moor, and Thieveley Pike. The walk is scheduled to finish by approximately 1:30 PM, leaving the rest of the day free for family activities, making it an ideal choice for those with weekend commitments.
Finally, on Wednesday, February 25, a 10-mile walk from Padiham is planned, visiting Padiham Heights, Copthurst, Pendle Hall, and the Higham/Ightenhill bridge, showcasing more of the area's diverse landscapes and history.
Membership and Contact Information
All walks are free to attend, but after three walks, participants are encouraged to join The Ramblers organization, at a cost of only £3.75 per month, supporting the group's activities and access to further benefits.
