London Colney Scouts Honoured with Prestigious Green Can Award for Outstanding Recycling Efforts
In a remarkable achievement for environmental stewardship, the 1st London Colney Scout Group has been recognised with a prestigious Green Can Award from the recycling not-for-profit Every Can Counts. This accolade celebrates their exceptional commitment to sustainability, having recycled more than 76,000 aluminium cans in the last year alone.
A Legacy of Sustainability and Community Engagement
Now in its 13th year, the Green Can Awards honour organisations and community groups that go above and beyond in their dedication to eco-friendly practices. The 1st London Colney group, comprised of 237 scouts aged between four and 18, has not only made a significant environmental impact but also raised over £3,500 through a partnership with local firm Pearce Recycling. This funding has been directly reinvested into the group, supporting various events and community initiatives, including a recent educational day trip to Whipsnade Zoo.
Building Local Connections and Raising Awareness
Passionate about fostering sustainability within their community, the scouts have diligently worked to build strong local connections. Their efforts include:
- Networking with nearby businesses to establish convenient drop-off points at shops, cafes, and social clubs.
- Hosting collection stations at village events to encourage widespread participation.
- Sharing informative posters, engaging social media content, and delivering short presentations at schools and community centres.
- Hosting informal 'recycling chats' to actively engage residents and promote environmental consciousness.
Demonstrating their deep commitment, the scouts have integrated sustainability into their weekly programme. Members explore critical topics such as the material life cycle of aluminium, carbon footprints, challenges within UK recycling infrastructure, and global waste management issues.
Rewards and Inspirational Leadership
In addition to the award, Every Can Counts will reward the group with an educational workshop led by the social enterprise Casting Innovations. During this session, scouts will learn about the infinite recyclability of aluminium and the melting process, with each participant casting their own keyring from recycled metal.
Ian Burnett, group lead volunteer at 1st London Colney Scouting Group, expressed immense pride, stating: "We're so proud of this award and the hard work our Troop has put in to achieve it. They've demonstrated a real passion for looking after the world around them and have made a mark within our local community, encouraging residents to take recycling seriously and collecting an impressive number of cans along the way! A big thank you to Every Can Counts for recognising their efforts as we know it means a lot to all the Scouts involved."
Chris Latham-Warde, programme manager at Every Can Counts, added: "The can-do attitude of the 1st London Colney Scouts is an inspiration, and the Troop is thoroughly deserving of their Green Can Award. Aside from their standout collection numbers, they've made a real difference within their local community, and we're really impressed with the behavioural changes they've contributed to, with lots of residents now putting aside their aluminium cans or even setting up their own recycling stations within the home. We can't wait to see what the Scouts do next and hope that they inspire other communities across the UK to take action - because every can, and every effort, counts."
